So what swords are your favorite? Katana is and Medieval Long swords are the well balanced type with longswords leaning better hacking things with brute force and katanas at cutting and both excellent at thrusting for two handed swords. But I have to say the Hollywood Arabian Scimitar (the most common portrayal you see in movies like Aladdin and various Arabian Night adaptations) is the most devastating weapon I seen. Superb hacking and cutting power (I literally hacked a small wooden log with it in half despite not using proper techniques) and very pointy tip that easily goes through meat. The only weakness I'd put the movie Arabian scimitar is is quite a bit heavier than European swords and Japanese swords of equal length (even though its surprisingly easy to hold with one hand) and can be slower even with training. Also despite its heavy weight and terrifying cutting power, the nature of its design makes it fare with more difficulty against metallic and lamellar armour, even Medieval Chainmail (despite its design giving it so much power it can easily cut small wooden log in half). Something with both Sengoku era katanas and knight swords often can do with considerable consistency at least enough to create punctures for small openings to eventually cut through with repeated blows.
And off the tangent, outside of item performance, the fact its damn hard to find MidEastern sword that resembles the movie scimitar is also a big hassle (by technicality the design isn't even Arabian in origin but actually Turkish and most MidEastern swords don't have the same design but are far more curved tot he point thrusting is VERY DIFFICULT, even the Turks didn't use the movie scimitar that much but a more narrower blade albeit witht he basic blue print of the movie scimitar).
But now I understand why the Byzantines feared Middle Eastern swords so much. Even though most of them lack the thrusting ability Hollywood often portrays with its own design of the Arabian Scimitar, the cutting power is so terrifying even if it fares worse against metal armor and shields than katanas and arming swords.
I also like Chinese swords (though because of how big and diverse China is, you can literally find Chinese swords that looks the same as knight swords and even use the precise same techniques as well as Kung Fu styles literally using Samurai techniques). Actually just by its diversity alone of having so many swords that act the same as every other culture on the planet, I'd give China the land of best swordcrafting. Really you can find Indonesian Kris as well as Spanish Rapier designs as early as the 16th century and even earlier simply because China's diversity and constant playing with metals led to so many different sword designs and styles of fighting. They had Zweihanders that can cut horses in half and Iadoesque styles of not doing any movement and simply reacting to any movement an enemy makes.
However I'd like to try the Espada Ropera or Spanish Rapier one time. Simply because no only is it as agile, flexible, long, and fast as your typical rapier...... But the damn sword can not only protect effectively against heavy weapons like halberds and large heavy war clubs, but it can easily cut off arms and legs and even behead without much difficulty! And also because some design allows you to use it two handed like a Medieval Arming Sword. The problem with mos rapiers is they are terrible to use as battlefield weapons since even lighter heavy weapons like maces can often get pass through defenses including blocks and parries but they often so terrible at cutting, even making small slices to irritate your enemy. Many can't even do that small slicing function. But the Espada Ropera has a track record of decapitating limbs and beheading esp the early ones used by Conquistadors like Pizarro and Cortes.
